Bats In Arizona

Updated: Sep 18, 2023

Observing bats in our yards and along The Arizona Canal.

We had the chance to attend an Arizona Game and Fish Department virtual presentation. We wanted to know more about nectar eating bats and Arizona bat habitats. We learned so much on bats from Jeff Meyers. Later we had follow-up questions answered by Cheyenne Dubiach. You can learn more about the Arizona Game and Fish Department here at their official site.

Plants For Bats

Nectar feeding bats in Arizona are attracted to taller, night blooming plants. An example of this is the organ pipe cactus. Looking for night flowering plants that have heights similar to the famous saguaro will give an idea as to what bats like.

Cheyenne Dubiach from AZGFD also added "These bats are seasonal critters. They spend their time in their northern ranges (Southern AZ) in the spring and summer. Then migrate south when it starts getting cold in the fall and winter."

A Tucson library article that focuses on bats favorite Arizona flowers, as well as how bats and hummingbirds share their feeder space, can be found here.

One interesting note is that bat houses in Greater Phoenix aren't known for being that successful. On the other hand, bats love palm tree skirts.

A canal walk with a Phoenix Bat Cave

Visit Phoenix has a detailed write up on the variety of reasons to bike or walk along The Arizona Canal. Want to know where to locate a local bat cave, urban waterfall, artwork, and more? All of that can be found here.
