Geocaching: Your real world treasure hunting adventure.

What Is It?

Geocaching is real world treasure hunting. Containers (known as 'caches') are all around the world placed by others. You can also place your own cache to continue the cycle.

Getting Started

The first thing you need to do to begin your adventure is download the geocaching app. If you go to your phone's app store and type in geocaching, you should see it. This app does have a premium version which unlocks more caches, but the free version will work fine.

Once you open the app, it will show where you are on a map (similar to Google Maps). On this map, there will be multiple circles with symbols in them. These are the caches, and different symbols mean different kinds of caches. The main one you need to know is the green circle with the box symbol. This shows a cache, which is what geocaching is all about. Clicking the icon 'navigate' will make a line on the app to the cache. From here you can go to the cache.

There's always a surprise waiting to be found.

Photographs happen in unusual locations.

Watch out for prickly plant life.

Finding Your First Cache

Once at the cache location, it's time to look around! Caches vary greatly in looks depending on which one you go after. Generally, it is a container. For more details, you can look at your cache's description on the app. After you leave the area, be sure to mark whether you found it or not. You can do this by clicking the 'log' button after you click on your cache's icon.

When you find the cache, the general rule is 'take an item, leave an item'. So if you take something, make sure to leave a little trinket for the next person. If you don't take anything, leaving a trinket is still nice for the next person. Because of this, it is good to bring some trinkets with you when you go out to put in caches. Overtime, you will find that you have a collection of various items. You will also, most likely, go to a lot of new places around your area. Happy hunting!
