Boyce Thompson Arboretum

Updated: Sep 18, 2023

Creating memories in a desert oasis.

Team G.O.T. has been visiting the Boyce Thompson Arboretum for many years. It’s the oldest and currently the largest arboretum in Arizona, with uniquely separate areas of interest within its many pathways. It is a peaceful slice of nature where you explore history within a hike.

As you enter the admission area, there’s also a gift shop. Around here you may find plants for purchase.

Want butterflies, roses, cacti, squirrels, birds, and sprawling trees? The Boyce Thompson Arboretum describes itself as "A botanical garden with an international collection of arid land plants". Take these well maintained trails, or maybe a bridge, and see an array of life tucked away along Queen Creek.

Some fun things to do around are finding water features, interesting structures, and greenhouses. Large shaded areas follow a stream, making for great photos. You can also go inside an early 1900’s rock house with a rose garden next to it.

The diverse gardens will give you something new around every corner. One example is the Australian Desert Exhibit. You may come across a listening panel or walk a labyrinth. Another point of interest is The Children’s Garden. It’s full of color with a sun mosaic you can’t miss. For kids and those at heart, look for the mini maze and human sundial.

Autumn colors are a treat here. Be sure to check the arboretum’s social media for seasonal updates, like the best flowering times or leaf changes. Special events like yoga in the garden, guided tours, and more can be found on their website calendar.

The official site for the arboretum can be found here.
